HRT & GDx: Reimbursement and Determining Which to Rent
Medicare and private carriers reimburse, on average, $83 per patient so it is common for practices to bill more than $3000 for a half-day rental of either the HRT or GDx. HRT is best for practices seeing a high volume of glaucoma suspects and/or patients with retinal disease because the ability to track change over time is critical for these patients. GDx is best for practices seeing a low volume of glaucoma suspects or for practices with just a few patients to scan. |

Optovue OCT NEW!
Fourier-domain high-speed, high-resolution OCT. Use for the early detection of glaucoma and retinal disease. Also anterior segment imaging. Offers powerful progression analysis to detect change over time. Data comparisons with a large, age-adjusted normative database. The Optovue provide high-resolution imaging of the retina, with detail and precision. |
Heidelberg Retina Tomograph (HRT) Glaucoma and Edema Analysis System |
HRT is the most documented, scientifically validated laser imaging instrument for the detection and management of glaucoma and is the only system that performs automatic change probability analysis, results of which can be critical to preventing glaucoma-induced blindness. |
GDx Scanning Laser Polarimeter
The GDxVCC does not require dilation and compares each patient's RNFL measurements to an age-stratified, multi-ethnic normative database. Using a unique Nerve Fiber Index (NFI) generated by neural network techniques, the GDxVCC determines the likelihood of glaucomatous damage. Normal, early RNFL damage, moderate RNFL damage and advanced RNFL damage are easily identifiable on color-coded printouts. The excellent reproducibility of the GDxVCC enables clinicians to evaluate glaucomatous changes over time using difference maps and trend lines. |
Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty (SLT)
The SLT is an effective, non-invasive laser technique and is the only clinically proven laser treatment that effectively lowers intraocular pressure without thermal damage or adverse side effects.
Currently, Medicare reimburses, on average, almost $350 per eye for this procedure and private insurers often reimburse more. By conservative estimates, a doctor could bill more than $4000 in a two-0hour period for this procedure.*
*This estimate reflects the national average reimbursement; actual reimbursement may vary. Check with your local carriers. |
